Mountain Shooting Star 58.45.23 - Collection of Glenbow

This undated watercolour recalls the Group of Seven’s solitary pine tree in a wind-swept landscape. The painting is also a reflection of the Group’s modernist attitude to art with an emphasis on young artists like Annora. They were developing their own individual style, a commitment to representing Canada’s distinctive regions and the use of stronger colours and bolder patterns. Brown referred to “living lines” of the landscape, and here, the blowing wild grasses and streaks of cloud evocatively represents those “lines”.
